Shabbat Vayeitzei 5782
Now that he’s become a man on the run, we see Ya’akov encounter challenges and build a family under the watchful eyes of his uncle Lavan. Lest you say that the Torah never condemns or even critiques Ya’akov for taking his older twin brother’s blessing, notice that experience turns out to be justice delayed. Upon realizing that he has married the wrong sister, Ya’akov confronts Lavan for deceiving him. Lavan replies, “It is not the practice in our place to marry off the younger before the older” (Genesis 29:26). Ya’akov has a reputation as a slick operator, and it continues to dog him throughout his life. Can Ya’akov endure Lavan’s treachery, and can he emerge whole from this tainted environment? Read the Torah portion, Parshat Vayeitzei, and use these musical clues to take yourself along on his journey..
Answers will be revealed after Shabbat ma’ariv and havdalah, which begins this week at 5:15 PM. Remember that beginning this week, we are having minhah at 12:30 PM, after morning services and kiddush.
Wishing you a Shabbat Shalom and happy listening,
