Shabbat Vayeshev/Hanukkah 5781

I can’t recall the last time Hanukkah began on a Thursday evening, which is what has to happen in order for the holiday to coincide with Parshat Vayeshev, a Torah portion earlier than usual, but here we are! We had the treat of Cantor Zim’s Hanukkah singalong Wednesday evening, so I’m only going to add one “official” Hanukkah track. This wonderfully kitchy arrangement of Hava Narima is by Israeli stars of yesteryear, Uzi Hitman and Chani Nachmias. It’s made for children, but it’s a classic–and what classical music does it “borrow?”

There’s enough Broadway above, so even though I could easily incorporate Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat in my parshah music scavenger hunt, let’s go in a different direction (though probably just as obvious):
