Shabbat Hukkat/Balak 5780

Dear Friends,

Ever since Shavu’ot, we have been out of sync with our Israeli sisters and brothers. For us, that Yom Tov was Friday and Shabbat; they only observed Friday, and resumed the Torah reading cycle on Shabbat. So we’ve been a week and parshah behind them. This is the week we catch up, reading both Hukkat and Balak

My dvar Torah this week combines my online learning, two recently released YouTube clips, and ruminations about the State of our Union on this Independence Day weekend.  Click here for the written versionOr, you can find the video link here

For this week’s music, I’ll stick with the Americana theme. Here’s the Avett Brothers song I mentioned in the dvar Torah.

Joey Weisenberg is rarity on the Jewish music scene in this way: his family has been in the United States since before the Civil War. He felt that he needed to celebrate his heritage with an Americana-flavored melody. He calls this one “Lincoln’s Niggun.”

For this week’s scavenger hunt, see if you can connect these songs to the Torah portions:
